More information
A football coach is employed to train and develop a soccer team in terms of fitness, skills, match practice and tactics. There are various levels, from youth football in schools, leisure centres, junior or amateur football clubs, semi-professional and professional clubs. Depending on the skill level, starting salaries can range from £16k to £24k per year according to the National Careers Service. But premiership and international club roles at the highest level can command enormous salaries. The minimum qualification you'll need to apply for a vacancy is the FAs Level 1 Coaching Certificate which will teach you about how to take coaching sessions and basic football tactics. There are numerous levels after this, ranging through to the UEFA Professional Licence. It will help if you've played football yourself as well - coaching and training a team is much easier if you know the game and can demonstrate the skills you're trying to teach. If you're applying to as a football coach to under 18s you'll need to go through the relevant Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks that check your suitability for working with children. Obviously, this is not a regular nine to five job. Training and matches will regularly be held on evenings and weekends so you'll need to be prepared for this.
