More information
Oracle is one of the world's largest software companies and many major corporations and public sector organisations use its products. As a result, there is strong demand for database administrators with Oracle experience.
Oracle salaries and entry requirements
All positions in this field are highly-skilled, so most staff are graduates. While some employers will take on people with non-technical degrees as trainees, candidates who have studied computer science, physics or mathematics will have an advantage when applying for entry-level positions.
Graduate trainees working as database administrators can expect a starting salary of around £25,000, but pay rises sharply with experience. Staff can improve their employment prospects and earnings potential by studying to become Oracle certified, beginning at associate level and progressing to professional and eventually master status.
As there is such demand for Oracle skills, most employers use IT recruitment agencies to find certified staff for permanent jobs. Qualified database administrators with three years' experience can expect salaries of between £40,000 and £55,000 a year, although that can climb to £70,000 in the financial services industry.
Some database administrators prefer to work on a contract basis and look for short-term assignments via specialist recruitment agencies. Daily rates for this type of temporary position are usually in the range of £200 to £450.
